Ex-Hoops defender leaves Premier League club sparking Celtic return rumour

Steven Pressley, a former Celtic defender, has left Brentford, leading to speculation about a possible return to Celtic.

In 2021, the 51-year-old was appointed to handle individual player development at the Premier League club.

Pressley helped propel players like Yehor Yarmoliuk, Ryan Trevitt, Ji-soo Kim, and Paris Maghoma from the B team to the senior squad.

Brentford confirmed Pressley’s departure on Thursday morning, stating, “After careful consideration, I’ve decided it’s time for a new challenge in my career,” on the club’s official website.

“I am grateful for the chance to work with some very talented individuals, which has helped me to develop personally, and I leave the club with some wonderful memories and friendships.”

Phil Giles, the Bee’s director of football, said: “I want to thank Steven for his dedication to Brentford over the last four seasons.”

He has been a terrific professional and a delight to get to know as a person, in addition to helping to develop some of our best young players and significantly influencing Premier League first-team performances.

I’d want to wish him luck in his future work on behalf of the entire Brentford team.

Pressley played in 22 games during his 18-month tenure at the Hoops under Gordon Strachan after joining from Hearts in 2006.

During his time at Celtic Park, he won two Scottish Premiership titles and earned an incredible 32 caps for Scotland.

What the future holds for Pressley following his departure from the Gtech Community Stadium is unknown.

Pressley has been out of club management since 2019 when he left Carlisle United. His former managerial positions included Pafos, Fleetwood Town, Coventry City, and Falkirk.

With multiple slots available in the Scottish Premiership and Championship, Pressley may be considering a return to Scotland in some manner.
