Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic and Cardiff City are all eyeing Fleetwood Town ‘keeper David Harrington, as per Football League World.
Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, and Cardiff City will all aspire to finish near the top of League One next season. BWFC is rebuilding under Steven Schumacher, while old colleague Ryan Lowe takes charge of the Latics and the relegated Bluebirds begin a new chapter.
All three teams will be looking for new signings before the season starts in around a month, and several players have been linked with the trio.
However, it is now being reported that they may compete for a single signing.
According to Football League World, Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, and Cardiff City are all interested in goalkeeper David Harrington, who is currently signed by League Two club Fleetwood Town.
The Cod Army believes Harrington’s contract will expire at the end of the 2025/26 season, but he may have a way out of Highbury Stadium before a free transfer opportunity occurs.
BWFC and its League One rivals are not the only ones interested, with 25-year-old Harrington also on the radar of Championship club Preston North End.
Who is David Harrington?
Harrington, 25, started at Cobh Academy before joining Cork City, his hometown club, in January 2018. He didn’t play much there, but he stood out when he did, holding 180 clean sheets in 35 games and surrendering only 22 goals.
He subsequently went to Fleetwood Town in 2023, where he has once again had to wait for a starting spot.
The rumoured Bolton Wanderers, Wigan Athletic, and Cardiff City target appeared in 21 of the Cod Army’s 22 games last season. His second half of the season was cut short by injuries, but he still kept a strong eight clean sheets.
Despite being born in Ireland, Harrington has represented Wales on a global scale.
Bolton Wanderers’ goalkeeper options
Bolton Wanderers have already signed one goalkeeper this summer, bringing Ted Sharman-Lowe on loan from Premier League heavyweights Chelsea.
However, following the releases of Nathan Baxter and Joel Coleman, as well as the sale of Luke Southwood, BWFC are in need of another goalkeeper.
If they can get him, Harrington will most likely act as backup and competition for loan player Sharman-Lowe. Luke Hutchinson is also on the roster, but the 22-year-old might be the third choice until the Trotters approve a loan move for senior game time.
