Sheffield United are in advanced talks to rehire former manager Chris Wilder, according to Football Insider sources. This comes after the Blades fired Ruben Selles following an atrocious start at Bramall Lane, with an official statement coming soon.
Yesterday (September 13), Football Insider exclusively revealed that Sheffield United were preparing a dramatic homecoming for Wilder, only three months after he was fired. According to reports, talks are quickly progressing and a formal deal is imminent, with the 57-year-old ready to take charge of his boyhood club for the third time.
Wilder holds no grudges after Sheffield United dismissal
Sheffield United’s US owners faced widespread criticism for sacking Wilder in June, following his failure to take the club to the Premier League. The Blades were defeated by Sunderland in the play-off final, meaning that despite earning 90 points during the 2024-25 season, they were forced to play another season in the Championship. Despite his unceremonious departure, insiders believe Wilder has no grievances against Sheffield United’s owners and is willing to forgive and forget in order to return to Bramall Lane.
The Sheffield club’s hierarchy was said to want a more modern strategy that would embrace new data and technologies, but so far, the shift in mindset has proven disastrous.
Wilder has huge task to turn Sheffield United around
Sheffield United are now at the bottom of the Championship, having lost five of their first five games this season and scoring only one goal. Selles failed to get the best out of a strong group, and he has ultimately paid the price for a catastrophic start.

A 5-0 defeat to Ipswich Town was the final straw for the Blades’ administration, with a major change seen as the only way to get the club back on track. Wilder, despite his extensive history with Sheffield United, faces a daunting assignment in turning around the fortunes of a team that is clearly lacking confidence. To allay fears of relegation to League One, the Englishman will most likely return to basics and improve United’s defensive performance.
