Exclusive: Coventry City join Derby County in transfer battle for Blackburn Rovers captain

Coventry City are ready to join the transfer battle for Blackburn Rovers captain Lewis Travis, sources have exclusively informed Football League World.

The Sky Blues were left reeling at the end of their two-legged Championship play-off semi-final against Sunderland, falling to a last-gasp extra-time goal from the Black Cats that ended their promotion dreams.

Manager Frank Lampard has yet to make any major moves in the summer market, with Spanish left-back Miguel Angel Brau the only confirmed new arrival from Granada on a free transfer, although it appears that the club is seeking for new midfield players.

FLW has learned that Coventry City is the latest club to express an interest in Blackburn midfielder Lewis Travis, who has already been linked with many Championship clubs this summer.

We exclusively disclosed earlier in June that Derby County manager John Eustace wants to reunite with the 27-year-old at Pride Park after managing him at Ewood Park, and the club was said to have joined Wrexham in the hunt for his services.

However, as of last week, the Red Dragons’ interest in Travis had cooled, leaving Derby free to pursue Travis’ services – that is, until Coventry entered the picture.

Coventry have a number of midfielders under contract for the 2025-26 season, including January recruit Matt Grimes, who joined from Swansea City, club captain Ben Sheaf, who has one year left on his contract but has an option to extend, Danish playmaker Victor Torp, and home-grown Josh Eccles.

Regardless, Lampard is preparing a move for Travis to further strengthen his squad ahead of the new season, though it remains to be seen whether City will make a formal offer in the near future.

Travis, who played 38 games for Blackburn in the Championship last season as they finished seventh, has been with Rovers since 2014, shortly after being released from Liverpool’s youth.

However, Blackburn may be forced to sell their captain this summer due to a contract dispute with him; he has only one year left on his present agreement in Lancashire.

According to Alan Nixon, Blackburn are “struggling” to get Travis to commit to a new contract despite one being on the table, and this summer may be their last chance to get a fee for his services, given that if his current situation continues, the engine room operator could negotiate a pre-contract arrangement with a non-English club in January 2026.
