EFL Analysis can exclusively reveal that Danny Rohl is the leading contender to land the Leicester City job.
Leicester have yet to fire Ruud van Nistelrooy and had planned to hire Russell Martin until he decided to join Rangers.
Rohl is almost surely leaving Sheffield Wednesday this summer and has previously been connected with the Foxes’ Championship rivals Southampton, who ultimately signed Will Still.
Danny Rohl now the favourite to become Leicester City manager
According to EFL Analysis’ Chief Football Correspondent Graeme Bailey, Rohl is the most likely to be in the Leicester dugout next season, and he is keen, but the attraction of returning to Germany may also play a factor.
He stated, “I don’t think Leicester are all in on anyone at the moment.” I believe they’re in a good situation; they’re examining their choices, and van Nistelrooy hasn’t left yet.
“I think Danny Rohl really wants it, especially after missing out on the Southampton job, and he’s definitely on the shortlist, but I don’t think Leicester are relying on him just yet.
“If and when Leicester do make their decision, and with options dwindling,” Bailey went on: “Danny Rohl is still very much the leading contender for Leicester.”
Leicester have a backup plan if Danny Rohl doesn’t join
There is no certainty that Rohl will wind up at the King Power Stadium, and with the Foxes facing a points deduction, the prospect of jumping ship from Wednesday to another team dealing with off-field issues may not be appealing.
As Bailey noted, Leicester aren’t “all in on anyone,” and Sean Dyche may be approached.
Bailey added that Dyche “can’t be ruled out,” but that he could be an alternative if preparations to advance on Rohl do not accelerate.
