The game is all about statistics, the size of the bid and the amount of money you can get the opponent to pay when you have a good hand and how you will manage to keep the pot low.
Exclusive: Don Goodman reacts to “staggering” Wrexham and Birmingham City wage revelations.
Concerns are undoubtedly being raised throughout the Championship as a result of claims that Wrexham AFC is willing to offer Fulham captain Tom Cairney an incredible £50,000-per-week contract, while fellow League One promotion rivals Birmingham City are offering £30,000-per-week for Peterborough winger Kwame Poku.
Both teams obviously don’t want to waste time getting ready for the next Championship season. Given that Cairney, 34, has been promoted from the Championship three times, Wrexham’s rumoured interest in him provides us a hint as to the calibre of player they hope to sign.
Cairney, whose contract expires this summer, has spent the last ten years in West London. If he moves, he will become the highest-paid player in Wrexham history.
The Blues’ £30,000-per-week offer to Kwame Poku, as exclusively disclosed by Football League World, thus demonstrates that the League One winners from the previous season are also willing to shell out large sums of money to compete in the second division.
Don Goodman renders a decision regarding Kwame Poku and Tom Cairney’s potential salaries at Birmingham City and Wrexham AFC.
The Red Dragons’ financial strength has undoubtedly changed as a result of Wrexham’s Hollywood ownership, and Birmingham City’s Knighthead Capital Management Group has also shown that they are prepared to make investments.
Paul Mullin was convinced to leave the professional leagues by the Welsh club after he won the League Two Golden Boot with Cambridge United in the 2021–2022 campaign. In order to help them reach a record 111 points last season, the Blues then paid Fulham almost £15.00 million for Jay Stansfield.
Current EFL analyst Don Goodman shared his opinions on the high-paying contracts that both teams are allegedly preparing in an exclusive interview with FLW.
“Wrexham is willing to pay Tom Cairney fifty thousand pounds per week, and Birmingham is willing to pay Kwame Poku thirty thousand pounds per week, so if those figures you quoted are accurate, they will be among the highest paid players in the Championship,” he told FLW.
“That in itself is staggering really to be fair but those are two players that would undoubtedly help those two clubs in the Championship next season, there’s no question and if thats the kind of money that its going to take for them to attract that kind of player then fair play to them.”
“It’s just a case of how many others can you put on those kind of wages, and if it’s not many is there going to be resentment and disharmony in the changing room, i’m not sure about that so yeah impressive numbers but they don’t really guarantee you anything.”
For background, it should come as no surprise that each player would rank among the most paid in the Championship with both salaries. Cairney would share £50,000 a week with three other people, except Aaron Ramsey, the interim manager of demoted Cardiff.
Championship competitors should be aware of Birmingham City’s and Wrexham AFC’s summer hiring.
The transfer window will open for ten days on July 1st and then reopen on July 16th, which is just over two weeks away. The two promoted teams’ activities will be closely watched by the rest of the Championship, maybe with some trepidation, as they could position themselves as serious promotion challengers if they both make significant expenditures before the ball has even been kicked.
Neither team will go into the Championship expecting to be in a relegation battle. It appears that the days of recently promoted teams only trying to survive are over, as Wrexham is looking for their fourth consecutive promotion and Tom Wagner has revealed that Birmingham will have the highest revenues of a non-parachute payment club.
Although it is unclear whether their ambitious ambitions will lead to a promotion push or a successful season overall, Goodman stated that they have undoubtedly communicated their objectives to the rest of the division.
