Exclusive: Lee Hendrie issues Gustavo Hamer transfer prediction – it would be bad news for Sheffield United

Lee Hendrie, a former midfielder for Aston Villa, thinks Sheffield United would be unable to hold onto Gustavo Hamer, the 2024–25 Championship Player of the Season, due to the Premier League’s allure.

The 28-year-old Dutchman has been one of the best players in the second division both at Coventry City and while wearing the Sheffield United shirt. In his one Premier League season, he scored four goals and provided six assists for the Blades.

Gustavo Hamer’s 2024/25 Championship stats (including play-offs), per Transfermarkt
Appearances (starts) 44 (39)
Goals 10
Assists 8

According to Dutch website Soccernews, Hamer may turn down offers from Eredivisie champions PSV in preference of returning to the Premier League, indicating that he feels he has unresolved business in the top flight of England.

Additionally, Hendrie, a current EFL analyst, thinks that a rival English team will eventually make a move for the dynamic attacking midfield player.

Lee Hendrie gives verdict on Gustavo Hamer, Sheffield United situation

In an exclusive interview with Football League World, Lee Hendrie stated that he wouldn’t hold it against Gustavo Hamer if he tried to return to the top division this summer because he has repeatedly shown himself to be one of the great Championship players.

“I just think he’s shown consistency, and he’s been one of the key players for some time at Sheffield United,” Hendrie stated.

Since Sheffield United didn’t get promoted [last season], you have to look at the standout players like Hamer, who would continue to be a standout in the Championship if he stays. For most players, playing in the Premier League is the ultimate goal.

“That’s the disappointment for Sheffield United.”

Blades supporters won’t want to hear Hendrie’s assessment on whether he thinks Hamer will stay at Bramall Lane come early August.

Hendrie went on, “I think he goes,”

It wouldn’t surprise me if one of the Premier League’s lowest teams made an attempt to sign him, even though I am aware that he has been linked to PSV.

“He’s shown good talent at both Sheffield United and Coventry, so it wouldn’t surprise me in the slightest if he’s out of the door in the summer.”

A Premier League dream may be enough to lure Gustavo Hamer away from Dutch return and Sheffield United stay

It appears that Gustavo Hamer shares Hendrie’s belief that playing in the Premier League is the ultimate goal for many football players.

Additionally, he has plenty of possible suitors. Leeds United and Everton are two teams who might be interested in bringing the Dutchman back to the promised land this summer, as both teams need a creative boost.

Hamer showed signs of being a member of the division, and after another season of dominating in the Championship, he is ready to take a step back. Sheffield United’s Premier League team from two seasons ago may go down as one of the worst in the history of the league.

Furthermore, Sheffield United may not be able to stop Hamer from leaving Bramall Lane this summer if the prospect of playing in the top division again in England is enough to lure him away from Champions League action at PSV.
