Exclusive: Lee Hendrie makes claim on Des Buckingham becoming next Huddersfield Town manager

Since firing Michael Duff in March, Huddersfield Town has been without a permanent manager.

By mutual agreement, Duff, 47, had been in charge of the Terriers for 10 months after Andre Breitenreiter left.

Even though they had previously gone 16 games without losing in League One, a sharp decline in performance—four

losses in five—made the former Barnsley and Swansea City manager’s job untenable.

Jon Worthington has been in charge since Duff left, and he is anticipated to stay in that position until a permanent

replacement is found in the summer.

Several high-profile EFL names, including Des Buckingham, Rob Edwards, and Wayne Rooney, have been linked

with the vacancy.

Lee Hendrie backs Des Buckingham for Huddersfield Town job

Football League World spoke exclusively with EFL commentator Lee Hendrie to find out who he thinks should be

Huddersfield’s top managerial target this summer, given the important choices that are coming up and the number

of well-known individuals that are in the running.

Hendrie informed FLW that “Huddersfield will obviously be looking for a new manager in the summer – Des

Buckingham’s linked, Rob Edwards, Wayne Rooney.”

“If you look at what Des Buckingham did at Oxford, he led them forward and, in my opinion, did a fantastic job there

to get them promoted into the Championship. Rob Edwards definitely did the same thing.”

“Wayne Rooney has undoubtedly held positions that have been unsuccessful; he has most likely entered at the wrong

periods and without the resources necessary to advance the clubs to a certain degree.

Out of those three, I believe Des Buckingham most likely meets the criteria. Rob might be considering something

higher in the Championship because of what he accomplished at Luton, his success there, and his promotion.

“Therefore, I would definitely think that Des Buckingham would fit in well with that football team.”

Post-Cartwright era could signal fresh start for Huddersfield Town

The team desperately needs stability and direction after a tumultuous run of managerial appointments under former

Director of Football Mark Cartwright.

From Neil Warnock to Michael Duff, five managers have come and gone in less than a year, and none of them have

been able to create any kind of long-term momentum. The outcome was relegation to League One and a miserable

2023–2024 season.

Manager Appointed End of time in post Games
Neil Warnock February 2023 September 2023 23

Andre Breitenreiter February 2024 May 2024 13
Michael Duff July 2024 March 2025 43
Jon Worthington March 2025 8

The recent departure of Cartwright may be a watershed. This summer presents Huddersfield with a unique chance to

reinvent their footballing identity and create something more cohesive and long-term, as a new figure is anticipated

to take over football operations. A key component of the rebuild will be selecting the appropriate manager.

Hendrie’s recommendation of Buckingham as a formidable contender is telling; the 40-year-old’s reputation for

playing forward-thinking, modern football and his recent success leading Oxford to the Championship may make

him the perfect choice for a team that needs a makeover.

Buckingham provides a combination of upward trajectory and tactical clarity that would be ideal for the Terriers’

present requirements, even though names like Edwards and Rooney carry profile.

The project at John Smith’s Stadium is broken but has the potential to be fruitful for whoever takes over.

Huddersfield needs direction, consistency, and the appropriate leadership to lead them forward after a period of

chaos.
