Exclusive: Preston North End agree deal to re-sign Daniel Iversen on permanent basis
Late in the 2024–25 season, the Lilywhites were placed in danger of relegation from the Championship, but a 2-2 draw away at Bristol City on the last day of the season, along with Luton Town’s 5-3 loss at West Brom and Hull’s 1-1 score at Portsmouth, allowed Paul Heckingbottom’s team to make a stunning comeback.
A familiar face is expected to return to Lancashire as planning for a partial rebuild of Deepdale may now begin in order to prevent such a scare in 2025–2026.
Three years after Iversen’s one-and-a-half-season loan with the Lilywhites ended, FLW exclusively reported in February that Preston North End was considering a return for the player this summer.
Heckingbottom and company seem to have acted swiftly to persuade the 27-year-old to join the team full-time, given the Dane’s contract with Leicester City is about to expire next month.
Iversen was first signed by Alex Neil in the January 2021 transfer window to replace Declan Rudd. He made a significant impact at PNE, winning the 2021–22 Player of the Season award while playing for the team under Frankie McAvoy and Ryan Lowe. He also kept 13 Championship clean sheets during that season.
Iversen, who returned to Leicester for the 2022–23 season, spent the majority of the season second in command to Danny Ward before making an appearance in their final 12 Premier League games of their relegation campaign. However, he fell out of favor under Enzo Maresca the following year and eventually joined Stoke City on loan in the second half of 2023–24.
After missing a full year of action, Iversen will now leave the King Power Stadium at the end of his contract and return to familiar surroundings as North End has signed a seasoned Championship goalkeeper on a free transfer.
