Reading FC keeper can ‘become a club legend’ says new chief.

New Reading CEO Joe Jacobson believes goalkeeper Joel Pereira can ‘become a club legend.’

The 28-year-old joined in 2023 and, despite starting as number two behind David Button, has been unchallenged number one for the past 18 months. After making over 50 appearances and establishing himself as one of the greatest keepers in the third division, the Royals fought off Championship and League One interest, especially from nearby Wycombe Wanderers, to sign the Portuguese star to another three-year contract. Jacobson, in his first off-field duty after nearly a decade at left-back for Wycombe Wanderers, spoke with The Reading Chronicle about the significance of preserving ‘El Gato.’

“It isn’t as simple as offering a contract and having them sign. Wingy [Lewis Wing] was fantastic, and that was a nice way to get one done early. We’ve wanted Joel to remain for a long time, but he had such a wonderful season that you almost hope he had a bad season so that fewer people would be interested in him. “He received numerous offers from the Championship and League One, including some big ones, so we had to battle. Joel wanted to stay because he enjoys being here, but everyone wants to advance in their careers. For his career, he can truly develop here, be consistent, and become a club icon. He’s only really played for a year, but I think he could turn into a club legend if he’s here for another few years.”

10 other players are out of contract on June 30 and while the Welshman admitted that not everyone will stay in Berkshire, he did confirm that some had already committed their futures and the club are close to a couple of external squad additions.
