Exclusive: Sheffield United Backed to Sign Sunderland “Upgrade”

Don Goodman has suggested that a potential deal between Sunderland and Sheffield United for Dan Ballard could benefit all parties involved.

According to Alan Nixon, the Black Cats have set an asking price of around £12 million to £15 million for the defender ahead of the summer transfer window.

Ballard has been a regular figure for Sunderland—when fit—since his arrival from Arsenal in 2022.

Earlier this month, Football League World exclusively revealed that Sheffield United have shortlisted the 25-year-old as a potential signing, but only if they secure promotion to the Premier League.

Don Goodman Weighs In on Dan Ballard Transfer

Goodman believes Ballard could be one of Sunderland’s more marketable assets this summer, especially considering the current defensive pecking order under Régis Le Bris.

He also suggested that the centre-back would be an upgrade on Chris Wilder’s existing options, making the deal a logical move—though it will ultimately depend on the league status of both clubs next season.

“Dan Ballard is another young player we’ve seen grow up in the EFL,”

Goodman told Football League World.

Dan Ballard’s Selected Championship Stats for 2024/25.

| Stat | Per 90 Minutes |

|—————|—————-|

| Tackles | 0.82 |

| Interceptions | 0.74 |

| Blocks | 0.74 |

| Clearances | 6.24 |

| Aerials Won | 4.93 |

“He’s 25 now and has had a somewhat injury-hit season. Even when he returned to fitness, he wasn’t immediately reinstated in the Sunderland starting XI.

From Sunderland’s perspective, he’s one of those younger players they might be open to selling if they can get a decent fee.

From Sheffield United’s side, he’d likely be an upgrade on what they currently have in the squad.”

“If Sheffield United win promotion—perhaps finishing in the top two, which remains a long shot—and Sunderland win the play-offs, would Ballard even want to make that switch?

There are a lot of variables, but my main takeaway is that Dan Ballard would represent an upgrade in Sheffield United’s current defensive options.”

A Deal That Could Make Sense for Everyone

Despite not having his best season, Ballard remains a proven Championship defender with the potential to compete at Premier League level.

A deal in the region of £12 million will depend on how much Sheffield United are willing to spend. If promoted, they may opt to keep spending conservative in preparation for a potential drop back down.

However, if the club’s new owners are prepared to back Chris Wilder in the market, Ballard would be a sensible and strategic defensive upgrade.

His injury record remains a concern, so Sheffield United would be wise not to exceed the £12–13 million range currently being discussed.
