Exclusive: Sheffield Wednesday to launch move to sign Cardiff City player

Cardiff City goalie Ethan Horvath is being targeted by Sheffield Wednesday, according to sources who spoke exclusively to Football League World.

As they search for a temporary substitute for Pierce Charles, their first-choice goalkeeper who has been sidelined by a shoulder injury, the Owls are prepared to make a bid to recruit Horvath from Cardiff.

Although Sheffield Wednesday can’t sign new players until owner Dejphon Chansiri can guarantee that he can pay them, things might be different in the event of a goalkeeping crisis because the team doesn’t currently have any senior options available due to Charles’ injury.

Horvath would provide Henrik Pedersen with a seasoned goalkeeper to use in Wednesday’s forthcoming games. Although it is currently unknown if the Owls are planning to sign him on a free transfer or an emergency loan, his arrival would be crucial.

Sheffield Wednesday will begin the process of acquiring Ethan Horvath

Since moving to England in 2021, Ethan Horvath has played goalkeeping for Nottingham Forest, Luton Town, and Cardiff City in the second division, giving him a plenty of Championship experience.

The 30-year-old formerly played for Club Brugge, where he obtained UEFA Champions League experience.

He made 33 Championship appearances for the Bluebirds in the previous two seasons, but since Nathan Trott joined on loan from FC Copenhagen in the summer, he has fallen down the ranks in South Wales and hasn’t played in the team at all this season.

In addition to providing Sheffield Wednesday with a solution to their present goalkeeping dilemma, a transfer to Hillsborough would allow Horvath to demonstrate that he is still capable of competing in the Championship.

The USA international was instrumental in helping Luton Town win promotion to the Premier League through the play-offs under Rob Edwards in the 2022–2023 season, maintaining 20 clean sheets across all competitions.

The Owls would have a better chance of gaining points as they continue to struggle under Chansiri’s terrible ownership if he could replicate similar performance for Sheffield Wednesday in the upcoming weeks.

In Pierce Charles’ absence, Horvath will have a lot of work to do

Pierce Charles for Sheffield Wednesday

Horvath, 30, will have large shoes to fill in Pierce Charles’ absence if Wednesday closes a deal for him.

The 20-year-old has made an impression in the first few weeks of the 2025–26 season. His performance in the EFL Cup penalty shootout against Bolton Wanderers demonstrates why teams like Rangers and West Ham United are interested in signing him during the current transfer window.

In order to avoid having to rely on an inexperienced rookie goalkeeper as the Owls attempt to contend in the Championship this season, Horvath should ideally be brought in as a temporary fix after Charles’ shoulder injury.

Since Sheffield Wednesday’s 18-year-old goalie Logan Stretch has only appeared on the bench this season, Horvath’s acquisition would spare Henrik Pedersen from having to start the teenager in the middle of the pitch for his first professional game.
