Exclusive: Sky Sports pundit reacts to “win-win” Bolton Wanderers transfer

Forward Mason Burstow has had a stop-start career so far since leaving the Chelsea set-up, and now he’s headed on loan from Hull City to League One Bolton Wanderers.

Eleven new players have already arrived at the Toughsheet Community Stadium this summer as Bolton continues to hone its first team roster ahead of the crucial League One start. \

They finished the 2024–25 season in eighth position, however they were only two points out of a play-off spot. They will be trying to close the ten-point gap with sixth-place Leyton Orient this season.

Since so many players are joining the team, attacking alternatives have not been disregarded.

The team had previously signed striker Sam Dalby, who was let go by Wrexham at the end of his contract. Mason Burstow, who spent the 2024–25 season at Hull City before joining Bolton on a season-long loan, is now another attacking option.

Burstow loan is a “win-win for all parties”, according to Don Goodman

Burstow’s decision to go down to League One could benefit everyone involved, according to Football League World’s exclusive interview with Sky Sports pundit Don Goodman: “I think the loan transfer of Mason Burstow from Hull to Bolton is a win-win for all parties, really.” He has a ton of potential as a player. He hasn’t been able to demonstrate it consistently; during his season-long loan from Chelsea, he only started 12 games for Sunderland and only eight for Hull last season.

Bolton would be the ideal venue for Burstow to hone his instinct in front of goal, according to Goodman: “He hasn’t really mastered the knack of finding the back of the net, which is obviously what it’s all about as a striker. I thus believe that a move down to League One, to a big football team like Bolton Wanderers, where you would expect them to be dominating, winning, and scoring a lot of goals, could be the chance for him to truly launch his career.”

Burstow needs to get into the habit of scoring goals

Prior to making his Premier League debut for Chelsea in August 2023, Mason Burstow was on loan at Charlton Athletic after being signed by Chelsea in 2022. However, he was transferred on loan to Sunderland less than two weeks later, although he only managed one goal in 20 appearances there and never really made an impression as a striker.

Chelsea sold him to Hull City in the summer of 2024, but he struggled to maintain a spot in the Hull squad the previous season, mostly playing off the bench and scoring just twice in 31 games.

According to Don Goodman, the habit-forming nature of goal scoring is the problem. Going to a team like Bolton Wanderers, who are predicted to dominate games and generate chances in League One next season, could be Burstow’s best chance to improve his three League goals from his first two full seasons as a senior professional.
