Exclusive: What Don Goodman thinks Brian Barry-Murphy must do at Cardiff City – Birmingham City named

Exclusive: Don Goodman’s recommendations for Brian Barry-Murphy’s duties at Cardiff City and Birmingham City

The 46-year-old is now the front-runner for the position, according to BBC Sport Wales.

Barry-Murphy left his position as manager of Rochdale in 2021, his only prior senior posting.

Despite their best efforts, the Bluebirds were unable to sign Nathan Jones as Charlton Athletic’s manager.

When asked what should be Barry-Murphy’s top priority as Bluebirds manager, former EFL striker and Sky Sports analyst Don Goodman told Football League World in an exclusive interview that Barry-Murphy needs to hang onto his core before the upcoming campaign.

“Retaining the best players at the football club is, in my opinion, the biggest thing,” Goodman said. “I believe Birmingham City would serve as my motivation.

After some thought, one may argue that relegating Birmingham City and pressing the reset button was the best course of action. The feel-good element returned, and they suddenly began winning games on a regular basis rather than losing a lot of them.

That is therefore crucial for whoever assumes leadership of Cardiff City.

“They have some talented players in their ranks, definitely at the League One level, and the goal is to get the most out of them and convince them to stay.”

Unlike other managers Cardiff has been associated with, such Jones or Des Buckingham, Barry-Murphy has a dearth of prior EFL experience.

If the Bluebirds aren’t fighting toward the end of League One, their supporters will start to wonder why their team chose to hire a manager with such a lack of expertise.

The Irish coach did, however, spend several years in Manchester City’s prestigious academy system, and recent events have demonstrated that experience under Pep Guardiola is invaluable.

It is encouraging for Barry-Murphy that managers like Mikel Arteta and Enzo Maresca earned their stripes in a similar manner.

Games 105
Wins 33
Draws 23
Losses 49

Nevertheless, Cardiff as a team is venturing into uncharted terrain.

The Welsh powerhouses will play in the third division for the first time since the 2002–03 season.

As a result, there will be more pressure to perform well right away and avoid taking a chance on a lengthy League One stay.

Because of this, Barry-Murphy cannot wait for a season to go by and settle in before he truly imposes his mindset on the club.

No, as the season goes on, the 46-year-old will have to make an immediate difference or risk losing his job.
