Josh Windass has emerged as one of the Championship’s most sought-after players following Sheffield Wednesday’s financial troubles and his stunning 13-goal total last season.
According to the Sheffield Star, Wrexham are apparently keeping eyes on the 31-year-old attacking midfielder’s status at Wednesday, who is also garnering interest from a number of other clubs, including Derby County, Norwich City, and Coventry City.
Windass has been with the Owls since 2020, becoming their leading scorer this century with 53 goals, but the club’s financial difficulties has left players and staff unpaid for several months.
Wednesday are currently subject to a three-window transfer ban imposed by the EFL due to reasons such as late wage payments, which creates the possibility that Windass, among others, will leave as free agents or for nominal sums.

Josh Windass might be a “big coup” for Wrexham AFC.

Sky Sports analyst Don Goodman spoke exclusively to FLW about Wrexham’s prospective interest in Windass and explained the Red Dragons’ pursuit of the offensive midfielder.
“I can understand Wrexham’s interest in Josh Windass; it would be a major coup,” Goodman added.
“We know that Phil Parkinson likes experienced players, but in reality how many of those experienced players are going to be playing week in, week out in the Championship next season – not too many at this stage I wouldn’t have thought.”
Parkinson’s predilection for season pros has been obvious throughout Wrexham’s climb, with the club boasting one of the highest average squad ages in previous tiers.
The veteran striker emphasised the problem that Phil Parkinson’s side faces, stating, “It would leave Wrexham with only a smattering of starting eleven that has extensive championship experience.”
“So somebody like Josh Windass, who did really well last season in terms of scoring goals and assists – 13 goals, five assists I think it was – I can definitely understand the attraction from Wrexham’s point of view.”
Wrexham’s Second-tier Challenge for 25/26

Wrexham’s astonishing rise from the National League to the Championship in just three seasons under Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney’s ownership has been nothing short of incredible.
However, the clear move up to the second division is their most difficult test yet, with Phil Parkinson needing to construct a squad capable of contending against well-established Championship sides and those relegated from the Premier League.
The Welsh club has already demonstrated its desire in the transfer market, with sources claiming they have a £30 million budget to spend on reinforcements, making Windass’ pocket change.
German clubs, as well as his old club Rangers, are thought to be keeping an eye on Windass’ situation; but, the appeal of playing for Wrexham with their Hollywood backing may prove pivotal in any future transfer negotiations.
Don Goodman’s assessment of Windass as a potential “big coup” for Wrexham appears well-founded considering the player’s proven second-tier pedigree, and at 31, Windass is exactly the type of proven performer that Parkinson has targeted throughout, similar to James McClean.
Securing a player of Windass’ ability would be a statement of purpose for the Red Dragons, as they would be up against stiff competition – and could very well help them fight for a fourth consecutive promotion.
