Exclusive: Sheffield Wednesday defender undergoes successful operation

Mackenzie Maltby, a young defender for Sheffield Wednesday, has had a successful surgery and can now start the

healing process.

The 20-year-old has just spent some time with the senior team, having joined them at St. George’s Park for their

preseason training camp earlier this month. He had two fantastic loan stints with Scarborough Athletic last season.

As he recuperates from a recent operation, he will now likely spend some time on the sidelines. It is anticipated that

he will return to action in September.

Wednesday may well be looking to call upon their youngsters this season given the current situation at the club, with

Danny Röhl’s first team currently made up of only 10 players over the age of 21.

What Maltby’s season looks like in terms of whether he spends more time on loan or stays at Hillsborough could

largely depend on what happens between now and the end of the transfer window, but he is a player who is rated

highly at Middlewood Road and seen as one for the future.

The centre back, who has spent many years in Wednesday’s academy, will be keen to return to duty as soon as
possible to build on his 2024–2025 improvement, and if everything goes according to plan, it shouldn’t be too long
until he can do so.

Last season, Maltby participated in 23 National League North games and made his FA Cup debut in a close loss to

Burton Albion in November.
