Coventry City news from CoventryLive as former Prem stars turned pundits, Pat Nevin and Chris Sutton, discuss the season’s transformation under Frank Lampard.
As Coventry City prepare for the final lap of their thrilling promotion race, former Premier League stars Pat Nevin and Chris Sutton have hailed the Sky Blues ’ remarkable transformation.
Scotland great Nevin has an unhappy play-off history, featuring in the Tranmere Rovers side which suffered three consecutive semi-final exits in the early 80s, and admits it is a daunting occasion.
But he told Radio Five’s Monday Night Club: “ Coventry to me is gigantic – not because of Frank Lampard but just because of the history of the last 10, 15, 20 years.
“It’s been extraordinary at that club. Sometimes you don’t think it’s going to survive, you don’t know where they’re playing half the time – all the things that they’ve gone through to find themselves on the cusp of it again.
“When a club goes through really difficult times, the fans can just dwindle away or else they get absolutely behind the club and will do everything to stick with them and they’ve been waiting for this for a long, long time Coventry City fans. It would be fantastic for them to get to the top level.”
Fellow pundit Chris Sutton agreed: “Coventry are really interesting. Around the time they made the change I think we all felt maybe that was a bit harsh because of what Mark Robins had achieved.
“He built the club to FA Cup semi-finalists – really should have been in the final but didn’t quite get there – and it was quite a courageous decision to bring Frank Lampard in. But they brought him in early enough and they’ve had that bit of a bounce – well more than a bounce – because of it.
“Frank was talking about the way he wanted to play on the front foot, the players needed to be a bit fitter, and sometimes you just need a fresh voice and they’ve really benefited from that.”
