‘Fantastic thing’ – Michael Beale reflects on Sunderland tenure amid ‘no animosity’ claim

“Amazing thing” is how Michael Beale describes his time at Sunderland despite the “no animosity” assertion.

Michael Beale, the former head coach of Sunderland, has once again expressed his thoughts on leaving the team, saying that he has “no animosity” and is “so pleased” to see the Black Cats back in the Premier League.

A few of seasons ago, the 44-year-old had a brief and tragic stint on Wearside, managing a dozen games from December 2023 to February 2024 before stepping down. After that, Mike Dodds took over as interim head coach until the end of the season, and the team ultimately placed 16th in the Championship standings. Beale and his family faced a challenging period in their personal lives during his stay in the North East, in addition to a string of on-field setbacks. His young niece Poppy experienced a relapse in her fight against cancer. Supporters responded by planning a minute-long ovation in honour of the four-year-old during a 3-1 victory over Plymouth Argyle at home.
Even though Beale’s professional career at the Stadium of Light ended poorly, he has stated that he has no animosity towards the Black Cats as a result of his departure. “We won both of my last two home games there, 3-1,” Beale stated in a recent episode of the Business of Sport podcast. The Sunderland supporters performed an amazing thing for my niece, who had leukaemia at the time. They applauded me and showed me how they felt.

However, the supporters’ reaction to the appointment wasn’t favourable. So, I’m not sure. They seemed to get along well with the former coach [Tony Mowbray], which I actually saw favourably. I’m not hostile against Sunderland. Of course, all of the fans express their emotions, and they are perfectly entitled to do so. However, barely a week before I went, my family demonstrated a great deal of concern and understanding during a trying period.

Beale continued by implying that several of the policies implemented while he was at the club have since helped Sunderland achieve success under current manager Regis Le Bris. “Some of the things that we talked about and implemented did go, and they’ve stated it on record, and the following year has been fantastic for them,” he continued. And I’m really happy for the members of the team who are at last back in the Premier League.
