Sassuolo confirm Armand Laurienté’s transfer to Sunderland is in the final stages following a £17.5 million agreement
Armand Laurienté’s deal to Sunderland is nearing completion, according to Sassuolo CEO Giovanni Carnevali, with the forward currently heading for a physical ahead of a Premier League switch.
Speaking at the United Charity Gala Dinner in Italy, Carnevali told the media that the two clubs had achieved a comprehensive deal for the 26-year-old, with official confirmation coming within 48 hours.
“It’s almost finished. “The player is on his way to medicals, and we’ve already reached an agreement with Sunderland,” Carnevali stated. “We’re in the final stages – I think we’ll make everything official tomorrow or Sunday.”
The transfer is thought to be worth over €20 million (roughly £17.5 million), making it one of Sunderland’s largest outlays in recent history. Laurienté is likely to sign a five-year contract and is the latest high-profile signing for head coach Régis Le Bris, sporting director Kristjaan Speakman, and director of football Florent Ghisolfi.

Last season, the French attacker scored 18 goals to help Sassuolo win promotion back to Serie A for the first time. Laurienté is a dynamic attacker who can play in the middle or on the left side, a position he frequently played under Le Bris at Lorient.
Carnevali recognized Laurienté’s departure would be a significant loss for the Italian club, but it would allow them to reinvest. “It’s going to be a difficult season,” he told me.
“Laurienté’s departure will cost us approximately €20 million, which will allow us to make useful investments in preparation for the championship. We still have a lot to accomplish; I’m not saying we’re behind, but the market is lengthy and complex.”
Sunderland are anticipated to publicly introduce Laurienté this weekend or early next week, pending the satisfactory completion of his physical and final paperwork. Le Bris’ squad is now in Portugal, where they will face Sevilla in a pre-season friendly on Saturday evening.
What has Kristjaan Speakman said recently?
Despite a quick start to the transfer season, Speakman says Sunderland is still hoping to add’several’ fresh players to its team.
Speakman recently spoke with Sky Sports before the Black Cats confirmed their sixth acquisition of the summer, Simon Adingra, who joins from Brighton & Hove Albion for an initial cost of £18.5 million. The club’s sports director indicated that the club was far from finished as they sought to construct a squad capable of surviving and thriving in the Premier League.
“We’ve still got several more players that we need to acquire in certain areas of the pitch,” Speakman said the crowd. “I’ll leave that open for you, but we need to locate the appropriate players. We have never made rash decisions. We’ll try to remain cool, but it’s a delicate balance of waiting and looking for [players]. Knowing you’ve got the correct ones is also important, as is making decisions.
“Momentum is vital. We want to make sure we have a good start. We knew we had three or four players who we felt were the best fit, and we tried them. I believe this demonstrates the ownership’s desire and the destiny of the club.”
