Five Arrested After Reports of Young People Causing Problems in Lichfield City Centre

Police have arrested five individuals following a series of incidents involving young people causing disruption in Lichfield city centre.

Officers were called to the area over the weekend after receiving multiple reports from concerned members of the public. Witnesses described groups of youths behaving in an anti-social manner, including reports of aggressive behaviour, public disturbances, and intimidation of local businesses and shoppers.

Staffordshire Police confirmed that they responded swiftly to the calls, with additional patrols deployed to the city centre to restore order. A spokesperson for the force said:

*”We received several reports on Saturday evening of groups of young people engaging in disruptive and anti-social behaviour in Lichfield city centre. Officers attended and engaged with those involved. As a result of our enquiries, five individuals were arrested on suspicion of public order offences and have been taken into custody for questioning.”

The arrests come amid growing concerns from residents and business owners about youth-related disorder in the city. Some shopkeepers have reported increased incidents of theft, vandalism, and verbal abuse in recent months, with many calling for a more visible police presence, especially during evenings and weekends.

One local business owner, who wished to remain anonymous, said:

*”It’s getting worse. They hang around in groups, intimidate people, and make it really unpleasant for customers. We’re relieved the police are taking action, but it shouldn’t have to reach this point before something is done.”*

Residents echoed similar sentiments. Sally Morton, 48, who lives just outside the city centre, said she now avoids the area after dark.

*”Lichfield used to feel so safe, but lately there’s a different atmosphere, especially with teenagers hanging around in big groups. I’m glad the police are stepping in — it’s about time.”*

Police have confirmed that those arrested are aged between 15 and 19 and are all from the local area. They are currently being held at separate stations while investigations continue. Officers are also reviewing CCTV footage and speaking with witnesses as they look to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incidents.

Chief Inspector Clare Wilson of Staffordshire Police urged the public to continue reporting concerns and promised that action would be taken to address anti-social behaviour.

*”We understand the impact that groups behaving in a disruptive manner can have on the community. Anti-social behaviour will not be tolerated, and we are committed to ensuring Lichfield remains a safe and welcoming place for everyone.”*

In addition to the arrests, police say they will be increasing foot patrols in the city centre over the coming weeks and working closely with Lichfield District Council and youth engagement teams to tackle the root causes of the behaviour.

Parents and guardians are also being encouraged to speak with their children about the consequences of anti-social behaviour and the importance of respecting the community.

Anyone with further information or who witnessed any incidents over the weekend is urged to contact Staffordshire Police via their website or by calling 101, quoting incident number 546 of 26 April.
