Five conclusions as Huddersfield Town horror show renders play-off talk laughable

The Terriers’ four-goal loss at The Valley, which could have been worse, highlighted how far they are from the necessary tempo.

1. That’s the standard for the play-offs, and Huddersfield Town are miles off it

Town could not have had a worse start to the game, but for some reason, it only got worse from there. It could have

and most likely should have been twice the loss margin if it weren’t for a few close Charlton misses, some

outstanding Lee Nicholls saves, and an offside flag.

Nothing good to say about it. Town could hardly get the first pass straight, let alone fail to thread passes together.

The center-backs were quite impressive. The midfield disappeared. The ball was hardly seen by the wingers. Town

resisted like a poor wafer ice cream cone smashed into a puddle, but Charlton looked unstoppable as they attacked

with speed and chilling accuracy.

This was 7-0 at Norwich levels of awful. In fact, scratch that, we have a more recent point of comparison: it was

Crawley losing 5-1 at the John Smith’s Stadium levels of terrible, and they’re on their way to League Two.

Forget the play-offs if Town are going to play half as badly as this. The very concept of a top six finish is risible at the

moment.
