Fondop is the big winner at Oldham Athletic’s awards night
Mike Fondop swept the board at Oldham Athletic’s end of season, scooping four out of the five main prizes.
Latics’ top scorer was voted players’ player of the year, supporters’ player of the year, won the Golden Boot for his 19-goal haul so far, and was also voted the Community Trust player of the year.
Defender Jake Caprice, who could not attend following surgery on his hamstring, picked up the manager’s player of the year prize, midfielder Josh Lundstram won the goal of the season award for his New Year’s Day right foot volley at Hartlepool United, while on-loan defender Jake Leake was voted the club’s young player of the year.
For Fondop, the awards have encapsulated a special season on a personal note.
“Like many people know it’s my best season so far so I’m very happy,” said the striker.
“I know it’s individual but it comes from a collective because you need a collective to push you to your limits, so I feel very blessed and I’m very grateful for that.”
And during his speech after being named the players’ player of the season, Fondop dedicated the award to his mum, who is visiting the UK for the first time and saw her son play professional football for the first time on the last day of the regular season at home to Ebbsfleet.
“I want to dedicate this to my mum because of all the sacrifices she made for me,” he said, raising his award aloft towards his mum, who was at the awards night.
Other awards on the night went to Kady Powers, who was the Women’s player of the year and David Amos and Holly Forder-Brown were the Academy players of the year.
Phil Arbelo-Dolan was named club person of the year for his work in the rebirth of the club’s academy, overseeing education and the development of new boys’ and girls’ pathways.
There were also special recognition awards for Athleticos Cameron Whitworth and Ryan Green.
