Before the team’s preseason trip to Indonesia, Gary Rowett hopes Oxford United can confirm a few new additions.
Prior to their travel to Indonesia on Wednesday, the U.S. team returned for training on Friday.
On Sunday, United will play their first game in Indonesia, which will be a considerably calmer window than it was last summer.
“Ed [Waldron, head of football operations] and his recruitment team have worked absolutely tirelessly over the summer,” stated U’s head coach Rowett.
“It is always challenging. You would assume that not much has been done since there are now no players present, but I can guarantee that Ed and others wouldn’t have taken a vacation.
As everyone is aware, he will have been there most days trying to bring the players in. It’s never really that easy. We should be able to close a couple agreements soon, I believe.
“Hopefully, we have a few more agreements in place where clubs may need to hold onto their players for a little while longer before letting them leave. The opposite is most likely also true.
Although the season hasn’t begun yet, I would expect that Indonesia has a few new faces on board.
Pre-season is crucial, of course, to help players cross the finish line and become ingrained in our culture and style of play.
“I believe that in order to find the greatest and most suitable players, you occasionally need to exercise patience. We would choose to do it if it were our only option.
“If you look at the numbers coming back, we’ve probably got 26 or 27 players already,” Rowett continued.
Naturally, you don’t need that many to begin with, but if we add four or five players of genuine quality to the mix who we believe can contribute to our first team and enhance our performance in various ways, and you raise the squad’s overall level of competition, then that squad is too large.
