Former Chelsea Youngster Abdulhalim Okunola Signs First Professional Contract with Southampton
Southampton FC have confirmed that promising young defender Abdulhalim Okunola has signed his first professional contract with the club — a deal that could see him remain at St Mary’s until 2027.
Okunola, who spent part of his youth career with Chelsea before making the switch to Southampton’s academy, has impressed the Saints’ coaching staff with his development over the past year. His rise through the ranks has now been rewarded with a professional deal, a significant milestone in the 18-year-old’s burgeoning career.
Speaking after putting pen to paper, Okunola expressed his delight at taking the next step in his football journey. “It’s a proud moment for me and my family,” he said. “Southampton has been a great place for me to grow both on and off the pitch. I’m grateful for the trust the club has shown in me, and I’m excited to keep working hard to see where this can take me.”
The centre-back, known for his physicality, composure on the ball, and strong leadership qualities, has been a key figure for Southampton’s Under-18s over the past season. His performances have not gone unnoticed, with the club’s senior academy staff keeping a close eye on his progress as part of their development plans.
Southampton’s Academy Director, Edd Vahid, praised Okunola’s attitude and potential. “Abdulhalim is a young player with great promise,” Vahid said. “He’s shown real commitment to his development, embracing the values we look for at Southampton. This contract is a reflection of the hard work he’s put in, and we’re looking forward to supporting him as he continues his journey with us.”
Okunola’s signing is another example of Southampton’s commitment to nurturing young talent, a hallmark of the club’s identity over the years. With a track record of producing Premier League stars and internationals, Saints continue to invest in their academy setup, offering young players a clear pathway into senior football.
Having previously been part of Chelsea’s youth system, Okunola joined Southampton aiming for regular development opportunities — a decision that now seems to be paying off. While competition for places remains fierce, his professional deal is seen as a strong indication that the club view him as a genuine prospect for the future.
The defender will now be aiming to build on his success with further appearances at Under-21 level, with the long-term goal of breaking into Russell Martin’s first team. Pre-season will provide further chances for Okunola to showcase his abilities as he continues to work under the watchful eye of Southampton’s coaching staff.
With his future now secured, Okunola is determined to repay the faith shown in him. “I want to keep pushing myself every day,” he added. “The hard work doesn’t stop here — this is just the beginning.”
Southampton fans will be eager to follow the next chapter in the defender’s career, hopeful that Okunola can be the latest in a long line of academy graduates to make their mark at St Mary’s.
