Former Green Bay Packers Kicker Signs with San Francisco 49ers

The Green Bay Packers achieved one of their main objectives earlier in the offseason by securing a dependable kicker for the foreseeable future. After Brayden Narveson struggled through the first seven weeks of the season, Brandon McManus was signed in the middle of the season and signed a three-year, $15.3 million contract to remain with the Packers.

McManus made 20/21 field goal attempts in 2024, and his 95.2% percentage for the season ranked second in franchise history. Narveson had the lowest field goal percentage of any qualified kicker in the NFL at the time of his acquisition, at 70.6%.

Obviously, neither McManus nor Narveson were on Green Bay’s roster at the start of the 2024 offseason.

Anders Carlson was selected in the 2023 draft to take the place of franchise leading scorer Mason Crosby, and it was expected that he would uphold the consistent kicking standard that Crosby had established during his 16 seasons with the Packers.

In his rookie season, Carlson made 81.8% of his field goals and a pitiful 87.2% of his extra points; as a result, Green Bay signed veteran kicker Greg Joseph to compete with Carlson for the starting position in 2024. Both players, however, performed poorly during training camp and the preseason, so the Packers cut them both and signed Narverson.

Joseph, who has a career field goal percentage of 82.3% and more game-winning field goals than any other player in NFL history, bounced around the league after being cut by the Packers. He beat out Carlson to join the Detroit Lions’ practice squad, but he was soon claimed by the New York Giants, who used him in six games before letting him go.

Joseph also played one game each for the Washington Commanders and New York Jets in 2024, finishing the season with an 80% field goal percentage and making all of his extra points.

Joseph will be up against Jake Moody, who the 49ers mysteriously selected in the third round of the 2023 NFL Draft and who played 14 games last season despite some injuries and only made 70.6% of his field goals.

If Joseph has a strong training camp, he has a good chance of replacing Moody in San Francisco, according to reports earlier on Friday that he is joining the team in the hopes of winning their starting position.
