Former Leicester City manager Steve Cooper is the early favourite to take over at Middlesbrough.

Michael Carrick has left his position as Boro’s head coach, the Sky Bet Championship club has announced.

The former Manchester United midfielder is leaving the Teesside club after failing to make the play-offs in the previous season.

Carrick, who previously served as United’s caretaker manager, has been in charge at Boro since October 2022.

A statement from the club read: “Middlesbrough Football Club has today parted ways with head coach Michael Carrick.

“Michael’s assistants Jonathan Woodgate and Graeme Carrick have also left the club.”

“We’d like to thank Michael, Jonathan, and Graeme for all of their hard work and unwavering dedication. We wish them all the best in the future.

Boro finished 10th in the 2024–25 season, four points outside of the play-off spots, after winning only one of their last six games.

At 5/2, Cooper is presently the bookies’ favourite to replace Carrick, ahead of Gary O’Neil (3/1).

The bookmakers’ early favourites are Rob Edwards (4/1), Sean Dyche (7/1), Steven Gerrard (9/1) and Danny Rohl (12/1).
