Former Reading defender returns to the game after post-Coventry City hiatus

Former Reading defender Adi Viveash has returned to football, joining Rob Edwards’ coaching staff at Championship side Middlesbrough.

The 55-year-old made over 75 games for the Royals across three seasons in the 1990s and early 2000s, but is best known for his coaching roles at Chelsea and Coventry City.

The former Walsall defender coached Chelsea’s Under-18s and Under-21s for nine years, working with players such as Conor Gallagher, Callum Hudson-Odoi, and Mason Mount.

Between 2017 and 2024, Viveash worked alongside former Reading loanee Mark Robins at Coventry City, helping the Sky Blues advance from League Two to the Championship play-off final and an FA Cup semi-final.

After seven great years as a duo, Viveash left, and Robins quickly followed, moving to Stoke City.

Edwards, who was in charge of Luton Town when the Hatters defeated Robins and Viveash in the Championship play-off final, signed a three-year contract with Riverside on Tuesday.

Michael Carrick was fired in the summer after Boro came close to making the play-offs twice.

Harry Watling, who has previously played for Chelsea, Millwall, West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers, and Rangers, will join the pair on Teesside.
