Gary Gardner, a former Sheffield Wednesday and Barnsley midfielder, has left Cambridge United after failing to make a single appearance.

Last summer, the League One club signed the 32-year-old on a two-year contract at the Abbey Stadium, viewed as a coup.

After six years at Birmingham City, he agreed to terms and had never played below Championship level.

Gardner, on the other hand, has been plagued by injuries and has not appeared for the U’s in the 2024/25 season.

Gary Gardner represented Barnsley during the 2017/18 campaign.

Mark Bonner, Cambridge’s director of football, stated: “Gary joined us last summer with great potential, and it’s disappointing for all parties that things haven’t turned out as we had hoped.

“Despite the setbacks, Gary has always demonstrated professionalism, and we thank him for his efforts.

“After careful consideration, we have mutually agreed to part ways. It is a situation that did not go as planned, but we believe this is the best way forward for everyone involved. We wish him all the best in the future.

Gardner, a product of Aston Villa’s academy, made his Premier League debut in December 2011 and has represented England at various youth levels.

During his early career at Villa Park, he was loaned to Wednesday, Barnsley, Coventry City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Nottingham Forest, and Birmingham.

He is Craig Gardner’s younger brother, who currently works as Birmingham’s director of football.

Craig previously worked as a coach at Hillsborough during Tony Pulis’ brief and ultimately unsuccessful reign.
