Former star retires aged 39

The former Sheffield A 39-year-old Coventry City and Charlton Athletic player retired on Wednesday.

Richard Wood, a former football player for Charlton Athletic, Coventry City, and Sheffield Wednesday, has declared his retirement on his X account.

At 39, Wood has decided to end his playing career. When his contract with Doncaster Rovers expires at the end of next month, he will formally hang up his boots.

Born in Ossett, Wood began his career at Sheffield Wednesday. Since then, he has participated in more than 650 games.

“You must listen to your body and say stop at the right time,” he wrote on social media. My conclusion has not been reached without much thought, and to be honest, I had never given the practicality of putting up the old magic hat much thought until now. That, in my opinion, speaks for itself.

“It has been a fairytale,” he continued. As a 17-year-old making my Sheffield Wednesday debut in 2003, I could never have imagined writing a resume with 667 appearances for eight different clubs—no wonder I’m creaking—and five promotions. Words cannot express how fortunate I feel to have had such a fulfilling career.

Former Sheffield Richard Wood, a player for Charlton Athletic and Coventry City, retires on Wednesday.

After progressing through the ranks at Sheffield Wednesday, Wood made 189 appearances for the Owls throughout his early career, contributing eight goals. In 2010, he then moved out of Hillsborough.

Before making the move permanent, Coventry City first signed him on loan. Throughout his 129 games with the Sky Blues, he scored eight goals.

Later, in 2013, Charlton Athletic enticed him south. But he only stayed in London for a year before moving back up north.

Wood later rose to prominence with Rotherham United and served the Millers admirably. He scored 22 goals in his 256 games.

Promotion of Doncaster Rovers

Wood joined Doncaster Rovers in 2023 to strengthen their defense. In addition to adding significant experience to their team, he has given Grant McCann’s choices at the back additional competitiveness and depth.

Since joining the Rovers, the Yorkshireman has participated in 34 games. They are currently getting ready for life in League One after being promoted from League Two.

Wood, however, has decided to end his playing career and will consider his options. Over the previous 12 months, he has experienced injury problems.
