Former Wigan Warriors forward Ben Flower has been appointed to a senior role within the coaching set-up at Wales’ women’s side in rugby union.
Flower has been coaching rugby league with the South Wales Jets since he retired in 2021. He ended his own on-field career with a brief time at Leigh, following eight seasons with Wigan, during which he won numerous awards.
And the Welsh international has now returned to union, where he began his career before moving to league with Crusaders in 2008.
Flower has been named Wales’ collision coach and will be with the women’s team for at least their summer tour of Australia as well as the 2018 Rugby World Cup in England.
He stated, “Being associated with Wales is always an honor, and being asked and given the opportunity to be connected with my nation is an honour you do not pass up.
“Having played at a World Cup as a player and to have this chance to play a role as Wales prepare for a World Cup is an opportunity I am looking forward to.”
Wales head coach Sean Lynn acknowledged he was thrilled to employ someone of Flower’s experience, having previously worked with the Welsh side in a different role.
He pointed out: “Ben is someone who has worked with this squad of players before and the W6N review highlighted the need to improve our collision work and dominance, both sides of the ball, as a real area we can improve on.”
