Four Arrested After Robbery at Shop in Chichester

Police have arrested four individuals following a robbery at a shop in Chichester, sparking a swift investigation that brought a rapid conclusion to the alarming incident.

The robbery took place around 7:30 PM on Friday evening at a convenience store on East Street, one of Chichester’s busiest shopping areas. According to Sussex Police, two masked men entered the store, threatening staff and customers before making off with cash, alcohol, and cigarettes. No injuries were reported, but staff were left badly shaken by the ordeal.

Officers were called to the scene within minutes after the shop’s panic alarm was triggered. Witnesses described seeing two men fleeing the area on foot, before getting into a nearby vehicle, which sped away toward the city outskirts.

An urgent investigation was launched, including a search of the area, forensic examinations, and reviewing CCTV footage. Later that evening, police intercepted a vehicle matching witness descriptions on the A259 near Chichester. Inside the car were four individuals — two men aged 24 and 27, a 19-year-old woman, and a 17-year-old boy — all of whom were arrested on suspicion of robbery.

Detective Inspector Louise White, leading the investigation, said:

*”This was a terrifying experience for the shop workers and members of the public who witnessed it. Thanks to the fast action of officers and help from the local community, we were able to swiftly identify and arrest four suspects. Our investigation is ongoing, and we encourage anyone with further information to come forward.”*

The suspects are currently being held in custody for questioning. Police confirmed that a quantity of cash, alcohol, and cigarettes were recovered from the vehicle during a search, along with items believed to have been used during the robbery, including face coverings and gloves.

Local businesses have been reassured by police that patrols will be stepped up in the area in the coming days to provide visibility and support. Chichester has historically been considered a safe area, and Friday’s robbery has caused concern among shop owners and residents alike.

One nearby business owner, who asked not to be named, said:

*”We’re all a bit shocked. Things like this don’t usually happen here. It’s good to hear the police responded so quickly and caught the people involved.”*

Councillor Emma Brooks also praised the police response, stating:

*”Incidents like this can have a real impact on a community’s sense of safety. It’s vital that we support our local businesses and ensure they feel secure. I commend the fast and effective work of Sussex Police.”*

Anyone who may have seen anything suspicious in the area around the time of the robbery, or who may have dashcam footage that could assist the investigation, is urged to contact Sussex Police quoting reference number 812 of 25 April. Alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
