The drama heading into the Championship final day was unrivalled, and Coventry City were involved in an intense battle for the play-offs.
After losing to Luton Town last time out, Coventry faced top-six rivals Middlesbrough, knowing a win would guarantee a place in the Championship play-offs.
EFL expert their season on a high, and ensure Frank Lampard would complete his rescue mission after taking over the Sky Blues when they were in 17th.
Michael Carrick’s men looked the brighter of the two teams in the first half, with fans praising Ben Wilson’s ‘sensational’ saves on his return between the sticks.
But it was midfielder Jack Rudoni who was the hero for his side, scoring twice to confirm their place in the top six.
Frank Lampard shares praise of the highest order for Jack Rudoni
Lampard needed his players to step up in this play-off showdown, and luckily, it was Rudoni who grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck.
The 23-year-old’s first goal was a superbly glanced header into the bottom left corner while his second was a calm finish past Mark Travers.
Speaking after the game, Lampard waxed lyrical over Rudoni’s performance, and even claimed the Englishman can header the ball better than he ever could.
“You worry when you don’t score and you’re on top but we got what we deserved in the end,” the Coventry boss said per BBC Sport.
“I talk to Rudoni a lot, he is a great kid. Every day he wants to get better. I never had that (heading ability). He beats me with that. He is constant energy, He can be the main man of the day.”
That is high praise from the Chelsea legend, who scored 13 headed goals in the Premier League with a shooting accuracy of 36%.
Rudoni comments after firing Coventry into the play-offs
Rudoni was snapped up from Huddersfield Town in the summer and he’s enjoyed a tremendous campaign at his new club.
The attacking midfielder has amassed 21 goal contributions in the Championship, including nine goals and 12 assists in 43 appearances.
He’s a vital to how this Coventry side ticks, but he also praised striker Brandon Thomas-Asante at full-time, stating how difficult it was to keep up with the pacey striker who assisted him for his second.
“It’s a great feeling – we have worked hard for this since the gaffer came in – from 17th to the play-offs,” Rudoni said. “I’ve popped a couple in, though I was blowing for the second, trying to keep up with Brandon Thomas-Asante.
“Everyone is buzzing. The noise was amazing. These fans get us through.”
Rudoni was delighted with the noises created inside the stadium, and hopefully, such an atmosphere can inspire them to victory over Sunderland.
