Frank Rothwell, the much-loved owner of Oldham Athletic FC and a well-known figure in the Greater Manchester community, is set to be awarded an Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List.

Rothwell, 74, has been recognised for his outstanding charitable work, particularly in the field of dementia research, and his unwavering commitment to philanthropy. The honour pays tribute not only to his contributions through sport and community initiatives but also to his record-breaking fundraising efforts and passion for making a difference.

In December 2020, Rothwell captured the nation’s imagination when, at the age of 70, he rowed solo across the Atlantic Ocean. The feat made him the oldest person at the time to complete the gruelling 3,000-mile Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge. His efforts weren’t just for personal triumph – they were driven by a deeper cause.

Rothwell raised over £1 million for Alzheimer’s Research UK, a cause close to his heart. The staggering sum helped fund vital studies aimed at understanding, treating, and ultimately curing the condition, which affects over 900,000 people in the UK alone.

In the years since, Frank has continued to support dementia causes through events, campaigns, and direct donations. His work has included sponsoring community dementia cafes, raising awareness through Oldham Athletic’s media platforms, and speaking publicly about the emotional impact the disease has on families.

Transforming Oldham – On and Off the Pitch

In 2022, Rothwell completed the takeover of Oldham Athletic at a time when the club’s future was uncertain. Under his leadership, the Latics have stabilised financially and reignited hope among supporters. Rothwell’s deep roots in the town and his open, transparent communication style have made him a fan favourite.

He has reinvested in Boundary Park, engaged local schools and charities, and reconnected the club with its fanbase – ensuring Oldham Athletic remains a vital part of the town’s identity.
