Free agent snubbing Saints for Russell Martin is actually a transfer relief

Southampton entered the summer window concerned about losing star loanees such as Samuel Edozie, but those fears are likely to vanish for the better.

During the last matchdays of the Premier League, Southampton received sound recommendations to try their hand at signing Kwame Poku. Poku is a typical up-and-coming wide attacker, but there are some key factors for the Saints to understand.

Starting with the 23-year-old’s on-field abilities, there are a couple of third-division seasons that aren’t particularly appealing in the first place. However, Poku’s free agent status allows him to be acquired for a low upfront sum.

That is strange, considering out-of-contract scenarios are typically reserved for seasoned performers or those nearing retirement. As a result, the board is unlikely to make any attempt to encourage Poku to come to St. Mary’s.

Edozie remains linked to Poku’s new club.

So, what does the Poku transfer mean for the Saints? According to journalist Graeme Bailey’s insightful update, Southampton may gain an indirect retention edge.

Bailey told EFL Analysis that he is waiting for Rangers. Perhaps. We know Russell Martin is an appealing choice for him right now.”

Southampton’s transfer ambitions have been hampered by former manager Martin’s desire for Samuel Edozie, but if they sign Poku, those concerns will be alleviated.

Furthermore, given their reluctance to pay high transfer fees, the Rangers will want to reconsider Poku’s credentials. As a result, Saints fans will know who to credit when Edozie begins to score ten goals every season under Will Still’s leadership. I hope the St. Mary’s crowd honors Gonzalo Jara in a similar fashion eventually.
