Fresh claims emerge over Michael Carrick’s future at Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough boss Michael Carrick’s position is under increasing pressure after missing out on the play-offs, reports Football League World.

Middlesbrough missed out on promotion to the Premier League again after failing to qualify for the play-offs. Boro have failed to advance in the years after Michael Carrick’s arrival.

Carrick maintained the Boro board’s faith earlier this season, when the club plummeted to 11th place in the league. However, despite holding out optimism that he might deliver a play-off place, the Teesside club finished 10th after a final-day defeat to Coventry City destroyed their slim top-six chances.

Football League World reports that Carrick is once again under threat at the Riverside.

Middlesbrough anticipated to place in the top six this season, but after falling short, it may be time to move on.

He joined Boro in October 2022 and had a successful debut season, finishing in the play-offs. Despite significant investment in the playing squad over the last two years, the club has yet to win a championship.

Finally, winning just one of their next five games might cost Carrick his job. Boro failed to capitalise on the clubs around them that were struggling with form.

A gamble for Middlesbrough?

This season has shown what can happen when a club fires its manager after failing to make the playoffs. Hull City did this and almost got relegated as a result, only surviving on the last day.
Far from the same would be expected given the gap in skill throughout the Middlesbrough squad and stability in the ownership, but Boro would need to be well prepared for the case of Carrick’s departure and pick their replacement properly.
If a change did await, the club would have time to consider up the appropriate alternative before the summer transfer market and pre-season.

Plenty of competition for managers

If Carrick is gone, Boro will be one of up to nine Championship clubs looking for a manager. The majority of those clubs will be in the same market as Middlesbrough, hoping to reclaim their place among the division’s elite sides.
Leicester City, Southampton, Norwich City, West Brom, Watford, and maybe Hull City are all seeking for a manager to lead them to the top of the table. Boro support its managers well, so they should be in a good position to find a suitable replacement.

They have given Carrick plenty of time to become a success at Boro. That is something that some of those sides cannot provide, therefore Middlesbrough may be in an excellent position if they seek a change.
