Gareth Southgate was reportedly turned down after proposing to take on his first managerial post since leaving England after last summer’s European Championships. During his eight-year career as England’s manager, Southgate guided the team to two global finals. However, after quitting his position following last summer’s heartbreaking defeat to Spain, the Middlesbrough veteran stated that he wanted a break. He has spent the past year working as a technical advisor for UEFA. Though he has been connected to a number of high-profile positions since leaving his Three Lions tenure, some believe he will never return to management. That was until this week, when sources in Poland claimed his reps offered Southgate’s services to the Polish Football Association.
They are now looking for a new manager after Michal Probierz left following a public feud with star player Robert Lewandowski. Instead of Southgate, Poland is claimed to want to hire Urawa Red Diamonds manager Maciej Skorza, with the president stating he rejected Southgate’s offer because he wanted a Polish manager.
PZPN president Cezary Kulesza stated, “We received an offer for his employment. But we must remember the fundamental point: no foreign coach will guarantee that we will advance to the world championship. If he offered us such a guarantee, I would hire him straight away.” Fernando Santos, the Portuguese manager, commanded the Polish national team for nine months beginning in January 2023, during which time the squad was unsuccessful. He used that to make his case, saying, “Fernando Santos is a fantastic example. Coach with success, great name, everyone celebrated, and the confirmation was unexpected and sad for all of us.” Middlesbrough WhatsApp
