Giorgos Giakoumakis Opens Door to Sensational Celtic Return

Giorgos Giakoumakis, a former Celtic striker, has revealed that he would leap at the chance to return to his home club.

Giakoumakis joined Celtic in the early days of Ange Postecoglou’s tenure, when the club was rebuilding its roster and dealing with post-pandemic uncertainty. Despite being the Eredivisie’s leading scorer prior to his departure, his first tenure at Celtic was hampered by injury and limited minutes, with Kyogo preferred in the midfield.

But the Greek forward’s defining moment occurred in February 2022. With Celtic trailing bottom-place Dundee with title pressure rising, he scored a flawless hat trick – left foot, right foot, and header – to lead the Hoops to a crucial 3-2 victory. It was a watershed moment that propelled Celtic three points ahead of Rangers in the title race.

The Greek international, who is now 30 years old and plays for Mexican giants Cruz Azul, admits he has never stopped thinking about a return to Parkhead.

He told Record Sport: “You want to start a fire? I’d love to play for Celtic again.

I’m not sure if that is a paradise or if it could happen again, but who wouldn’t? “Even if you don’t know what it’s like to be there, you’ll understand what it means once you’ve been there.

“So, if someone played for Celtic and was successful, and you asked him a couple of years later, ‘Would you play again for Celtic?’ and he says no, he’s a stupid guy.

He’s so dumb. “So, yes, I would love to wear this jersey again. I’m not sure if this cycle is complete for me, but that’s the reality.”

Giakoumakis’ Celtic career came to an end with a late League Cup goal against Kilmarnock, a fitting farewell for a striker who made an impact. Despite starting only 11 of Celtic’s 38 league games, he finished as the club’s leading scorer.

He joined Atlanta United in February 2023 for a reported £4.3 million, before moving to Mexico.
