Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has said Tom Cannon will be a ‘good player’ for them in the future.
Sheffield United splashed around £10million to lure the striker to Bramall Lane from Leicester City in the January transfer window. However, he has struggled to make an impact with the Blades so far.
Cannon, 22, scored his first goal for the South Yorkshire outfit away at Burnley on Easter Monday. They ended up losing 2-1 to the Clarets at Turf Moor.
Wilder has delivered his verdict, as per a report by The Star: “He was up against arguably the best player in the division [in Burnley’s Maxime Estève], so it was great for him. He’s going to be a good player for us. I don’t think he’s had many chances, and his injury came at an unfortunate time for him. Tyrese (Campbell) scored some goals and that form kept Tom out. That’s how it is, and that’s good for us.”
Cannon spent the first half of this season on loan at Stoke City and was a hit during his time at the Bet365 Stadium. He fired 11 goals in 25 matches for the Potters before he was recalled and sold by Leicester City.
Sheffield United latest regarding Tom Cannon
Sheffield United brought in Cannon this past winter to boost their attacking ranks. SUFC have had to be patient with the forward over the past couple of months.
It has taken the Merseyside-born man 13 games to get his first goal. He will now be looking to kick on and get more as the Blades prepare for the play-offs.
Cannon rose up through the ranks at Everton and was a regular for them at various different youth levels before playing four times for their first-team. He was loaned out to Preston North End by the Toffees to get some experience.
Leicester City then snapped him up full-time in 2023 and he helped them go up last year. They then let him head out the exit door on a temporary basis when Stoke City came calling.
Will Sheffield United get promoted?
Sheffield United have missed out on the top two to Leeds United and Burnley. SUFC will now need to go through the play-offs.
The Blades have two more fixtures left to play before the end of the regular campaign. They play Stoke City away this weekend before they face Blackburn Rovers on the final day.
Cannon will be relieved to be off the mark now and has the chance to get more goals over the coming weeks. Wilder’s men are sat in 3rd place in the table and are inside the top six along with Sunderland, Bristol City and Coventry City.
