Graeme Souness throws mega money case study at Rangers takeover kings with his £50m masterplan now ready for Celtic
Rangers legend Graeme Souness has pulled out a blockbuster case study against teams splashing the cash – having previously advised the Ibrox chiefs to spend big to match Celtic.
Souness has already made it clear how much he feels to be spent to dethrone the Hoops – believing that Gers need to splash £50million on up to four excellent players to reduce the gap on Celtic last year.
When the 71-year-old tried to close the gap between the Glasgow rivals, he said, “The club that spends big always rises to the top.”
He stated at the time: “Rangers and Celtic are currently separated, but it’s not insurmountable.
Rangers don’t currently have the funds, but three or four high-caliber additions may make the difference. It would be a tie between the two of them if they spent £50 million.
“Rangers now only need money.” They invested £14 million on new players and finished second last year; Celtic spent twice as much and won the league.
“Despite spending half the money, they were still able to defeat them and finish second. The only thing they require is a surge of funds.
He has now supported his claim by citing the enormous financial resources that support English clubs’ ascent to European glory.
A total of six Premier League teams could be assured of playing in the Champions League the following season as a result of Manchester United and Tottenham’s victories in the Europa League semi-final first leg ramp.
He wrote for the Daily Mail: “Results in the Europa League on Thursday mean it is a very real prospect that six English teams will be competing in the Champions League next season.”
“But that shouldn’t come as a surprise for the richest league in the world.
The biggest indicator is what we spend on transfer fees.” “We are fortunate here because we can buy the best players with the product we have and the TV money involved.”
“Usually, if you look down the league table, the team that spends the most on wages is at the top. It hasn’t happened all at once.”
“We don’t produce the greatest coaches or the best players, but we are top of the tree because the maximum amount of money is spent here.”
“Last summer, the Premier League spent £2.19 billion. To put it in perspective, La Liga spent £506 million, while Serie A was the next closest spender with £990 million.
“Clubs like Liverpool couldn’t match the German or Italian teams financially when I was playing. Real Madrid and La Liga president Javier Tebas are not as pleased as they once were because of this.
Going into the upcoming season, Souness will be hoping that 49ers Enterprises and pharmaceutical tycoon Andrew Cavenagh will take his warning seriously.
