Hackett Exclusive: Watford’s Sissoko red ‘inevitable’ as Burnley goal wrongly stood
With a 2-1 victory over Watford at Vicarage Road on Friday, April 19, Scott Parker’s Clarets team moved one step closer to promotion to the Premier League. However,
they were somewhat assisted by their hosts’ lack of discipline in that match, particularly when Sissoko was shown two yellow cards in a few seconds with the ball not even in play.
The former PGMOL chief and former FIFA official exclusively told Football Insider that the midfielder needed to be calmed down by his teammate before receiving a second yellow after Burnley took the lead.
With only eight minutes remaining in the game, Mamadou Doumbia of Tom Cleverley’s team had actually taken the lead through Mamadou Doumbia.
Burnley, however, would equalize just before halftime through Zian Flemming, before taking the lead through a close-range finish from Josh Brownhill, a possible Celtic transfer target.
Sissoko was not happy that the goal was not disallowed for a push by Flemming on Watford full-back Jeremy Ngakia during the build-up, and referee Matt Donohue gave him a booking for his protests.
Watford last five games | Result |
Plymouth (H) | Drew 0-0 |
Bristol City (A) | Lost 2-1 |
Hull (H) | Won 1-0 |
West Brom (A) | Lost 2-1 |
Burnley (H) | Lost 2-1 |
Following that goal, Flemming was seen pushing Sissoko as the Frenchman attempted to steal a march into the Burnley half as the two teams lined up to kick off.
A confrontation between the two sets of players resulted in Sissoko receiving a second yellow and red card after the Watford player shoved his opponent to the ground in retaliation.
Now, Hackett has stated that the second booking for the 35-year-old was “inevitable” for what he did, although he does have sympathy over the decision to award that goal in the first place, something the former official was “amazed.
