Hamza Choudhury drops Sheffield United transfer hint amid Leicester City future uncertainty

Despite the uncertainty surrounding his time at parent club Leicester City, Hamza Choudhury appears to have dropped a major hint about his future with Sheffield United. After joining the Blades on loan in January, the midfielder wowed teammates, coaches, and fans alike, and he finished the season as their first-choice right-back.

United had the option of signing Choudhury this summer after talking with City, who requested an obligation if the Blades regained their Premier League status. And given his versatility and Championship experience, having helped City win the division in 2023/24, many United fans would have preferred to see him return.

We understand that the Blades’ recruitment staff were also keen to keep Choudhury, but the Bangladesh international, who made an emotional debut for his country during his time at Bramall Lane, attracting a new legion of fans from South Asia, appears to have said his goodbyes to United this week.

Following Saturday’s 2-1 defeat to Sunderland in the play-off final at Wembley Stadium, the 27-year-old said on Instagram: “Such a horrible way to conclude the season. I’ve been struggling to find the appropriate words for the past few days. I believe we deserved so much more, but that’s not what was written!

“I want to thank everyone associated with Sheffield United, the Gaffer and his staff, all my teammates and to every single fan for making my time so memorable here! I’ve appreciated being able to play and represent this unique club! UTB.”

Choudhury received an outpouring of solidarity from his United teammates in the comments, with Blades players including Rhian Brewster, Sydie Peck, and Andre Brooks referring to Choudhury as a “brother.” Tyrese Campbell wrote, “Family,” with a love heart emoji, adding, “Was a pleasure, brother.”

City may feel that Choudhury’s Championship background and experience will be valuable after dropping back into the second division, while United’s other loan players are anticipated to return to their parent clubs this summer before making decisions about their future.

Harry Clarke is in a similar situation after Ipswich Town were relegated from the Premier League, while Alfie Gilchrist and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, who were absent from the side that met Sunderland at Wembley Stadium on Saturday, will return to London to join Chelsea and Crystal Palace, respectively.

Rob Holding also returns to the capital to face an unclear future at FA Cup winners Crystal Palace, where the former Arsenal player has struggled since leaving the Emirates. A handful of United’s own young loanees, like Louie Marsh, who spent half of the season at Fleetwood Town, will return to Bramall Lane before making judgments on their immediate prospects next season.
