Hayden Hackney ‘commitment’ point made as Rob Edwards is asked about his Middlesbrough future

Hayden Hackney scored as Middlesbrough defeated Millwall 3-0 in London.

According to Rob Edwards, Hayden Hackney demonstrated his commitment to Middlesbrough with an outstanding performance at Millwall. Hackney scored Boro’s crucial first goal in a 3-0 victory over Millwall and was one of Boro’s best performers overall.

His dedication to the cause was demonstrated only moments after he scored, when he ran back to cover a rare opening behind Dael Fry for Millwall, applying a massive block. Hackney’s first goal of the season for Boro comes after a shaky summer.

Boro received an offer worth somewhat more than £20 million for the midfielder from Ipswich, but he later declined the move to the Championship club.

When asked about the Boro star afterward, Edwards remarked, “I felt Hayden was outstanding today. Lots of enthusiasm, plenty of quality, and a genuine desire and passion. He won a number of duels, and his running was excellent.

That’s the best he’s looked for us since returning from his successful summer with the national team. “He’s a winner, and he’s shown it by being a member of a highly successful team. You can see it there: he adores the club. He’s been really professional throughout, and he adores the club. I can’t be happy with him. Right now, all I see is that he’s here with us.

“So I’m constantly checking in with him because he has a lot going on. I believe it is up to me and everyone else to judge him based on his performance.

His work ethic and determination were on full display today.” When asked about his future at Boro with two weeks left in the window, Edwards reaffirmed earlier sentiments on a possible exit, but said it wasn’t something he was considering just now.

“I’ve said it before, it’s win-win either way,” he went on. “But I am not thinking about it right now. I perceive him as being here and an important member of this group. Regardless, it’s a win-win situation. His play today was great, and he scored the goal. “I think he enjoys this club.”
