Hayden Hackney details the huge impact Michael Carrick’s had on his Boro career
Middlesbrough head coach Michael Carrick celebrates with Hayden Hackney
Hayden Hackney has detailed how important Michael Carrick has been in his career – noting that sometimes it’s been the littlest of tips that have most improved his game.
The Middlesbrough head coach is under pressure this summer after a disappointing tenth-placed finish in the Championship. The club’s hierarchy are currently undertaking a thorough review of the season and the things that need changing to bring about improvement next season. Said review will ultimately determine Carrick’s future at the club.
The Boro fan base seem divided on the issue of Carrick’s future but it’s understood that the players are still very much behind him. He’s helped numerous individuals improve as players in his two-and-a-half years at the club, not least Hackney. Though Carrick didn’t hand the Redcar star his debut, the Manchester United midfield legend has undoubtedly been hugely influential.
Speaking in a club interview, Hackney said: “It was Lidds [Craig Liddle] and Leo [Percovich] who first gave me my chance and obviously I’ll forever be grateful to them for that. Then the gaffer came in and he just kept me in and started me in his first game against Preson. I just kicked on from there really.
“I’ve learned loads from him. A lot of things you wouldn’t even think are big, but when you’re in a game, it helps you so much. It’s been perfect for me really, given he was a midfielder. The little pointers and tips.
“It was an unreal time, if I’m being honest. For me personally, I was starting a lot of the games back-to-back, and the team we were in, everything was just going for us at that point. We had some great players. It was a good time.
“At the time, when you’re just in it and thinking about game to game, you probably don’t even think much about it. But now, looking back, you realise how great a time it was. It was a chance I had to take because if I hadn’t, you wonder if one would have ever come again.”
