“He was a monster,” QPR said, told which player they cannot sell – he would be hard to replace
Jonathan Varane needed some time to become settled in West London, but by the conclusion of the season, he
showed himself to be one of the Championship’s top defensive midfielders.
For a meagre £875,000, the Frenchman joined QPR last summer after playing for Sporting Gijon in the Spanish
second level for a few seasons. The Hoops are now thwarting offers from elite teams for the 23-year-old that could
reach £5 million.
Although Julien Stephan’s team is having an exceptionally successful summer transfer window ahead of their 11th
straight Championship season, keeping Varane on board will be crucial if QPR is to truly establish their play-off
credentials this year.
Because the midfield player is essential to the Hoops and because he has the potential to at least double his price tag
if he continues to develop as much as he did towards the end of last season, Louis Moir, FLW’s QPR fan pundit,
thinks his team cannot afford to lose him this summer.

“In terms of the way he’s developed for the most part of last season, his first in England, Jonathan Varane is gaining
a lot of interest,” Moir stated to Football League World.
“Last season didn’t start off well. He was clearly learning and adjusting, but given how rapidly he changed and
matured, he was a monster in video games.
“The final game of last season, Sunderland away, he was the best player on the pitch, and we can’t afford to lose him
this summer,” he stated.

Moir brought up the £5 million offer that QPR turned down earlier in the summer window from La Liga team
Espanyol. He sees this as a plus and thinks Varane might be worth even more if he can carry on with his strong play
from the end of the previous season into the next one.
“He could be worth a lot of money if he were to get back on track and play consistently for the majority of the season,
and I believe [this summer] we just cannot afford [to lose him].”
It will be difficult to resist selling if offers are made that we are unable to turn down, but in all honesty, I didn’t
anticipate these bids after a year.
“So I truly believe that if he shows more of what he’s about, then it’ll be tough to keep him next season.”

However, it might be hard for QPR to turn down a high deal, and the fact that Jonathan Varane will have to be sold
this summer may set in before the deadline of September 1st.
According to Moir, replacing him this summer will be extremely difficult since “he’s a top, top player, and he’s still
very young with big potential.”
“We would have a significant void in the midfield if he were to leave after just one season, and it would be difficult to
replace him given how dominant he is there.
“Fingers crossed that no bids come in where we can’t say no, and fingers crossed we can see him play for one more
season, but with the way modern football is now, you buy players for cheap and sell them on – it’s the way you move
on.”
Even though Moir wants Varane to stay for a while longer, it appears that he is prepared to lose him this time next
year. He knows that the potential profit margin on the 23-year-old will be too great to ignore in a season or two,
particularly if QPR stays in the second division.
“The perfect situation would be that we’d keep him for longer than next season, but if he does well, and we get big
money for him, then that would be very beneficial for the club, moving forward.”
