Hearts transfer latest as next summer priority named and club favourite in Sheffield Wednesday future update

Here are some of the latest Hearts transfer headlines including a club favourite’s Sheffield Wednesday contract situation.

Hearts are completing their final preparations for the next Premiership season, which has included a lot of transfer work.

With the help of Jamestown Analytics, a number of new head coach Derek McInnes’ additions have made an immediate impact in the Premier Sports Cup, winning all four of their group stage games to advance to the final 16. They face Sunderland in Craig Gordon’s testimonial before focusing on the league opener against Aberdeen, with winger Sabah Kerjota joining as the latest signing.

As business continues up and down the country, here are some of the most recent Hearts transfer headlines, including Andrew McKinlay updates and a club hero’s future plans with Sheffield Wednesday.

Hearts transfer priority

CEO McKinlay has revealed that, amid a slew of new arrivals, attention will now be given to transferring some players away from Hearts. He told Hearts TV, “I’m not going to mention names in that regard. That is very much the manager’s point of view now that he has had the opportunity to analyze the squad. Unfortunately, some players will be surplus to needs based solely on numbers.

“So, we’re hoping to get some players out before the end of the window. The amount we get in will be determined in part by what goes out. It is not that we are not searching or watching; we will constantly be doing so. But I think we’re all very confident that if things stopped tomorrow and the window closed, we’d have too large a squad, but we’d be satisfied with what we’ve got from an inside perspective.

“We’re all pretty positive about that and we’ll continue to make changes window by window with the analytics and we would expect to see the squad get better each window as we come through it.”

Impressive Hearts transfer business

McKinlay has also been impressed with Hearts’ business so far this summer, with more to come. He stated: “We used the analytics in January, but this is the first summer window that we’ve used it, and it’s been fantastic. It has been fascinating. I believe it’s fair to say, and I hope this is the opinion of the supporters, that some of the players we’ve brought in thus far have struck the ground running. Some of these players appear to be really excited. You can tell we are going to play differently.

“What we haven’t had yet is the new width on the right, which we now have Kerjota in, and I believe, as everyone knows, we’re expecting to have Kabore rectified as well. And so it’s been fantastic.”

Hearts hero’s Sheffield Wednesday contract update

Meanwhile, Sheffield Wednesday’s Callum Paterson is poised to play a friendly as his future is uncertain. The versatile fan favourite who played for Hearts from 2012 to 2017 is out of contract due to off-field issues at the Owls, but The Star reports Patterson is still with Sheffield Wednesday, who want to sign him again after spending since 2020 at Hillsborough.

According to reports, “Free agency former Sheffield Wednesday man Callum Paterson will play in Owls colors in a behind-closed-doors friendly battle this weekend amid hopes of re-signing with the club.

“Wednesday are operating under the rules of constraints on what deals may be offered and made, and it is believed that Paterson, who has 31 goals and 15 assists in his 186-appearance Owls career to date, would be permitted to formally rejoin the squad following a period of back-to-back training with the group. Wednesday revealed that the 30-year-old would play in a private practice against League One Mansfield Town at Middlewood Road on Saturday.
