‘He’s a focal point’ – Sheffield United man praised by former Blades player
Sheffield United ace Gustavo Hamer has been described as the Blades’ “focal point” by former player Paul Parker.
The midfielder has been one of the standout performers at Bramall Lane since joining from Coventry City in 2023. Despite strong speculation surrounding his future this summer, the club managed to retain his services beyond the transfer deadline on Monday, 1st September — a decision that many fans and pundits alike have hailed as crucial to their chances of enjoying a more stable season in the Championship.
Speaking on BBC Radio Sheffield, former United defender Paul Parker heaped praise on Hamer, insisting that his influence in midfield makes him irreplaceable.
“Hamer is the focal point of this Sheffield United side,” Parker said. “Everything good they do goes through him. He’s not only got the ability to pick a pass and keep things ticking over, but he’s also a leader who drives others on. Keeping hold of him in the window was as big as any signing they could have made.”
Parker, who enjoyed a brief spell at Bramall Lane in the late 1990s, believes Hamer’s technical ability sets him apart in a squad otherwise built on grit and work-rate. He added: “You need that spark in midfield, and he provides it. Without him, United would lose a lot of their identity.”
Hamer was linked with a move away throughout the summer transfer window, with reports suggesting interest from both Premier League clubs and ambitious European sides. However, the Blades held firm, rejecting approaches and underlining their determination to keep one of their most valuable assets.
For manager Chris Wilder, retaining Hamer was a non-negotiable. The Dutch-born Brazilian has become a key part of his tactical setup, often dictating tempo and linking the defensive and attacking units seamlessly. Wilder recently admitted: “It was vital we didn’t lose him. He makes us tick, and the lads look up to him.”
Since arriving at United, Hamer has been a consistent performer. His vision, passing range, and set-piece quality have often provided the difference in tight matches. He has also shown a knack for scoring important goals, something that Parker pointed out as another reason for his “focal point” tag.
“When the pressure is on, he doesn’t hide,” Parker explained. “He steps up with big moments — whether it’s a delivery from a corner or a strike from distance. That’s the mark of a top player.”
Sheffield United supporters will be relieved to see Hamer still in red and white, especially after a turbulent summer that also saw speculation around other key players. With his future secured, at least for now, attention turns to how he can help drive the Blades up the table.
Parker concluded: “The Championship is relentless, but with Hamer in the side, United have someone who can unlock defences and bring calmness when things get frantic. That’s why he’s so vital to them — he’s their heartbeat.”
For United, keeping hold of Gustavo Hamer could prove to be one of the most important decisions of the season.
