Historic 400-Year-Old Hotel Engulfed in Midhurst Fire Amid Refugee Housing Reports
A devastating blaze tore through the heart of Midhurst, West Sussex, engulfing a 400-year-old Grade II-listed hotel in the early hours of the morning. The Angel Inn, a landmark steeped in centuries of history, was among several buildings consumed by the flames, with reports indicating that Ukrainian refugees were among those being housed at the premises.
The fire broke out just after 1 a.m., prompting a major emergency response. West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service dispatched more than a dozen fire engines, with crews battling through the night to contain the inferno. Thick plumes of smoke blanketed the historic market town, and nearby roads were swiftly closed off as a precaution.
Eyewitnesses described the scene as “heartbreaking,” with flames tearing through the timber-framed building, reducing parts of the structure to rubble. Residents were evacuated from adjacent buildings, while those being housed in the hotel were led to safety. Thankfully, there have been no reports of serious injuries, though several individuals were treated for smoke inhalation.
Initial reports suggest that a number of Ukrainian refugees, believed to have fled the ongoing conflict in their homeland, had been residing at the Angel Inn as part of a local housing initiative. Emergency housing and support services have since been arranged for the displaced residents, with local authorities and charities coordinating efforts to provide shelter, food, and emotional support.
Midhurst resident Alison Green, who lives a few doors down from the inn, told reporters: “It’s an awful tragedy. The Angel Inn has been part of this town for centuries—it’s heartbreaking to see it like this. Knowing that people who’ve already been through so much were caught up in this makes it even harder to process.”
Built in the 17th century, The Angel Inn was known for its charming architecture, oak beams, and rich historical ties. Over the years, it had welcomed countless visitors and was considered a cherished heritage asset by the local community.
West Sussex County Council released a statement expressing deep concern for those affected and thanking emergency services for their swift action. “We are coordinating with partner agencies to ensure everyone displaced by the fire receives the support they need,” the statement read. “Our thoughts are with all those impacted by this tragic event, especially the families and individuals who had already endured great hardship.”
Fire investigators are now working to determine the cause of the blaze. Early indications point to an accidental ignition, but a full investigation is ongoing.
As the town begins the difficult process of coming to terms with the loss, residents have begun rallying together. A fundraiser has been launched to support those affected, with hundreds of donations pouring in within hours.
