How big-money Rangers signing’s Everton career turned calamitous after exit decision just six months into Merseyside stint.

Following a trophyless season the previous year and a dismal start to the season under new manager Russell Martin, Scottish powerhouse Rangers are in dire need of a comeback.

Many changes have been made in an attempt to make Rangers a domestic power again soon, but the largest risk was perhaps made on deadline day when the team agreed to spend £8 million plus an additional £2 million in add-ons to recruit Youssef Chermiti, an Everton outcast.

Following the high-profile departures of Hamza Igamane and Cyriel Dessers in the same transfer window, the club’s desire to support former Southampton manager Martin is evident in the signing, which was their biggest deal since bringing Tore Andre Flo to Ibrox from Chelsea in 2000. After two dismal seasons on Merseyside that never really went as planned following his £14 million transfer from Sporting Lisbon in 2023, Chermiti, like Rangers, is looking for a comeback.

After demonstrating promise in the Portuguese city, Youssef Chermiti was viewed as the kind of football player who may eventually become a first team star when he joined Everton in 2023, soon after the side had just avoided relegation for two straight seasons. The Portugal youth international’s transfer to Merseyside was rather unexpected. It seemed especially bold to spend £15 million for a young forward with no experience in the first team at a time when the team was thin and funds were restricted.
