“The biggest thing to point out right now is just the total lack of any clarity as to how this saga ends.”
Rob Staton of BBC Radio Sheffield, who co-hosts with Andy Giddings, has been talking to supporters about the continued unrest at Hillsborough under Dejphon Chansiri’s ownership.
In addition to not paying wages on time in March, Sheffield Wednesday was placed under a registration embargo by the EFL on Thursday for failing to pay its May payroll to its employees and players.
“The players who are currently at the club will be wondering what on earth is going on,” Staton stated.
“They will be shocked. Is it reasonable to assume that any of the Sheffield Wednesday players who are under contract would feel the need to go and play for another team?
“They might be telling their agents, ‘Get me out of here, get me to a different club where I know I’m going to get paid on time, where there is a direction, where there is a future.'”
“You would not blame them for feeling that way.”
Giddings concurred that players will be extremely worried about the club’s near future and financial stability.
“They frequently talk about challenges with recruiting and appealing to prospective players, or even current players who may have received contract offers and are asking themselves, ‘Well, I could sign that, but is that contract going to be served fully?'” he continued.
“Given the last two or three months, the answer to that is maybe not.”
