Burnley ended one spot off the bottom of the standings and gave up 78 goals in their 38 games during their previous stint in the top tier. Scott Parker can’t afford it to happen again, especially because his career would most likely be at stake if they run into similar issues the following season.

Burnley has recently signed Axel Tuanzebe, who may be a perfect match for them given their current situation. He has extensive experience in the Championship and has played at this level for three separate clubs: Manchester United, Aston Villa, and Ipswich.
Tuanzebe signed a 12-month deal with Ipswich in 2023, and when the Tractor Boys unexpectedly made it to the Premier League, he extended it. However, as Ipswich was sent back to the Championship, he declined a new deal.
Although Tuanzebe won’t be inexpensive, his history of injuries may limit his demand for pay.
However, this does not imply that Tuanzebe is a cheap choice for Burnley.
Regarding his transfer fee, this is undoubtedly the case. These are never less than zero. Naturally, this does not include his pay, and because Tuanzebe plays in the Premier League, his demands may have been exorbitant.
According to Capology, Tuanzebe earned £40,000 a week, or slightly more than £2 million annually, during the 2024–25 season at Ipswich.
A five-year deal would cost around £10.5 million before incentives or other benefits are taken into account. Burnley’s announcement confirming his arrival made no mention of the length of the contract.
Nor is this the highest salary he has ever received in his career. According to Capology, his weekly wage at Manchester United was £50,000.
Is Burnley really that far gone? Although such a pay would place him among their greatest earners, it would seem that they might have given their wage bill for the 2023–24 season, when they were last in the Premier League. The Championship the previous season would have been no exception.
However, there are also a few red flags associated with Tuanzebe’s name, chief among them being his injury history from the 2024–25 campaign. The Turkish team Trabzonspor reportedly withdrew from talks with him in part because of the 100 days he missed playing for Ipswich previous season due to various physical concerns. He could have had to somewhat reduce his pay expectations due to his injury history.
Only with the advantage of hindsight can the issue of whether Tuanzebe can actually provide “value for money” be answered. He will undoubtedly have succeeded if Burnley can avoid relegation the following season with him in the centre of their defensive. The defender apparently couldn’t resist the allure of joining a defence that was so frugal the previous season.
However, Burnley faces that risk as they get ready for another season in the top division, where they hope to outperform their last campaign, given the dismal record of recently promoted teams into the Premier League over the past two years.
